Better Than Cough Syrup Home Remedy
As most of you know, I live my life with a small bubble boy. He is seemingly allergic to everything and has more mucous in his head and chest than I ever thought was possible. OTC cough syrups seem to fail when they try to battle his sinuses. Not only that, but my poor little guy gets bronchitis at least twice a year. It does hurt my heart to hear him coughing all day and night, but it is also super annoying.
Before you sharpen your pitchforks and call me a bad mom, I do take him to the doctors… a lot. We are in there constantly. At some point you have to think there is a better option, especially after you spend countless nights with a pillow over your head to drown out the cough fest going on in the next room. And no, I don’t just leave him to cough himself unconscious, I try everything possible. I get him to sit up, take spoonfuls of honey, apply mustard plasters and vapor rubs, run humidifiers, put him in the warm shower, drug him with more antibiotics and OTC syrups, give him breathing treatments, and anything else I can think of. Nothing works.
So I am spending another night scouring the internet for anything that I haven’t tried when I read something about pineapple juice. I know what you’re thinking, “Colbie has gone mad, pineapple juice? She cannot be serious.”
I thought the same thing. Was I really going to be reduced to giving my baby fruit juice and hoping it helps? Yes. That is how over his coughing I am. I would make him suck cactus leaves if I thought it would help at this point.
But there is actually science behind pineapple juice and its ability to help coughs and colds. In fact, pineapple juice was once used to help treat tuberculosis. Cool, right? According to healthline, “Pineapple juice contains a mixture of enzymes called bromelain, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. It’s thought that bromelain can help with respiratory problems that are tied to allergies and asthma. It’s also thought to have mucolytic properties that help break up and expel mucus.”
So I found a recipe- and let me tell you, it packs a punch.
For this Better Than Cough Syrup Home Remedy,
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 1 tsp. minced or chopped ginger
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp. salt
Drink 1/4 cup up to three times a day and feel the relief. Moms, add a splash of rum because you could use it at this point. Seriously though, once you get past the spicy, it feels like you are drinking a fancy tropical cocktail.
I have actually started drinking 1/4 every morning just because it wakes me up and gives me an energized feeling. And because it tasted way better than a plain ginger shot.
