Detox Yellow Dhal Recipe
If you have not tried dhal (dal, daal, dahl) yet then this is a pretty simple detox recipe that is full of flavors, warmth and goodness.
Dhal is known for its detoxifying effects due to all of the amazing healing spices, and of course the heath benefits of the lentils are indisputable.
There is a ton of different ways to make dhal this recipe is super easy and a great start to getting your own personal detox dhal recipe.
My house is all about spice so we use extra cayenne pepper, for those who don’t like spice you can use a mild chili powder.
I serve this with a thick greek yogurt fresh chopped onion and a side of garlic Jasmin rice.
The trick with making dhal is to temper the spices ….. basically this means, heat the spices in oil until their flavours are released, about 2 min.
1 1/2 cups yellow split peas, picked over, washed and drained
3 cups water
1 onion chopped
1 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 pieces of ginger
1 tsp salt
1 tsp garam masala
3 tbsp ghee or coconut oil
2-3 cloves of garlic peeled and chopped
Put the dal, ginger, 1/2 tsp salt and water in a heavy pot.
Bring to a boil removing any surface scum.
Cover, leaving the lid slightly ajar.
Turn heat to low and simmer until dal is tender about 20 min, (stirring as you go to prevent sticking).
Remove the ginger pieces.
Heat the ghee or coconut oil in a small frying pan over medium heat.
Add the spices (except the cayenne) and garlic tempering for a few minutes
Stir and fry until the garlic pieces are lightly browned.
Add the cayenne into the pan and quickly pour the mixture into the pot with the dal.
Stir to mix.
*Boil on low – medium heat as yellow lentils can boil over super quickly.
